Azimi Family Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2017 by Mehdi Azimi, Ph.D., 1981 alumnus of the Hudson College of Public Health. Dr. Azimi has been involved in the consultation practice of development, implementation and administration of public and environmental health and risk management through promotion and prevention since 1978 for private companies, government agencies, health care facilities, hospitals and prison systems nationally and internationally.  Dr. Azimi, now owns his own risk-management company, has a strong passion for environmental health and wishes to give back and support future public health professionals.

Selection criteria:

  • Full-time, regularly enrolled student in the Hudson College of Public Health Department of Occupational and Environmental Health.
  • Overall GPA of 3.00 or higher.

Dr. Rod and Shirley Bradley Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2018 by Dr. Sharyl K. Kinney in memory of her parents, Dr. Rod and Mrs. Shirley Bradley. Dr. Kinney earned both her MPH and DrPH from the Hudson College of Public Health. She serves as Assistant Professor and Vice Chair in the Department of Health Administration and Policy in the Hudson College of Public Health for the past six years. She previously worked for the Oklahoma State Department of Health for twenty-five years. Dr. Rod Bradley practiced family medicine in Greensburg, Kansas for forty years and worked with the University of Kansas Medical School as a preceptor to medical students and residents. Shirley Bradley was a registered nurse, who with her husband, initiated public health programs in the community, including school immunizations and influenza vaccinations. Throughout their lives, Rod and Shirley supported education and public health in their rural community. This scholarship will support their legacy.

Selection criteria:

  • Full-time, regularly enrolled Master of Public Health student in the Hudson College of Public Health.
  • Overall GPA 3.00 or higher.
  • Priority consideration given to MPH students enrolled in Health Administration and Policy.

Edward N Brandt, Jr Scholarship

Two $2,500 scholarships

The scholarship was established in 2004 to honor Edward N. Brandt J., MD (1933-2007). Dr. Brandt was a Professor Emeritus at OU College of Public Health and College of Medicine, and avid Sooner fan. He served as Dean of Graduate Studies and College of Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch; the Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs, University of Texas System; President, University of Maryland at Baltimore. He served as Executive Dean for OU College of Medicine. Dr. Brant was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as Assistant Secretary of Health, Department of Health and Human Services. He was recognized by many as the godfather of women's health, increasing the national awareness of women's health and health care. He was an elected member of Institutes of Medicine and Fellowship in the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

  • Full-time, regularly enrolled student in the College of Public Health or the College of Medicine
  • Overall GPA of 3.5
  • Resident of the State of Oklahoma

Dale W Bratzler Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2016 by Dr. Dale W. Bratzler to provide scholarships to students pursing an MPH or MHA degree in the area of Health Administration and Policy.  Dr. Bratzler is a long-time employee of the University with a commitment to helping OU students succeed and meet their professional goals and careers.  Dr. Bratzler, Professor and Dean of the College of Public Health, is an alumni of the college where he received his MPH in 1996.

Selection criteria:

  • Enrolled student in the Department of Health Administration and Policy MPH or MHA degree program
  • Overall GPA of 3.3 or higher

Burns-Schaiff Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2016 to honor Tim and Robyn (Burns) Schaiff.  Robyn is a critical care pharmacotherapy specialist and works as a cardiovascular senior medical director at Pfizer.  Tim is a PhD molecular biologist currently working for a start-up company developing point-of-care assays.  The Schaiffs met while undergraduates at the University of Kansas, received their doctoral degrees from the University of Iowa and currently reside in the greater St Louis area.  The preference for this scholarship is to a support practicum experience or research in the area of tobacco dependence cessation and/or tobacco prevention.

Selection criteria:

  • Enrolled student in the College of Public Health
  • Overall GPA of 3.00
  • Preference given to students undertaking a practicum project or research in the area of tobacco dependence cessation and /or tobacco use prevention

Calvey Family Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2004 to honor the Calvey Family. The members of Calvey Family are supporters of the next generation of Public Health Professionals. Harry J. Calvey (deceased) was active in the oil and gas industry in Oklahoma for many years. Kevin Calvey JD served in the Oklahoma legislature. Mike Calvey runs a successful venture firm. Cathy Calvey Chandler is a full-time mother and Occupational Therapist. Beth Calvey Bohanon, DDS practices in Oklahoma City. Mary Jane Calvey runs an Environmental Consulting firm, Real World Management Solutions, and serves on the Board of Advisors for the OU College of Public Health

Selection criteria:

  • Full-time, regularly enrolled student in the College of Public Health
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Consideration will be given to applicants who intend to pursue a career in community based public health practice, such as the departments of health or environmental protection

Ronald L Coleman Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2009 to honor Ronald L. Coleman, PhD (1934-2008). Dr. Coleman served OU for 37 years, 15 as Chair, Department of Occupational and Environmental Health. He was an environmental toxicologist, his area of research focused on biochemical effects of carbon black, metals and petroleum products. He was recognized with several campus-wide awards for his commitment to students and outstanding teaching. He was a lifelong learner who was never limited by "the box" and believed success comes from persistence and hard work. He was widely published, including book chapters, national presentations and prestigious scholarly journals. He was a modest man, who didn't take himself too seriously and who valued personal integrity above all else. He devoted to his faith, family, community and service.

Selection criteria:

  • Full-time, regularly enrolled student in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5  
  • Demonstrated financial need    
  • Plus consideration given to applicants who have demonstrated involvement in volunteer service activities

ConocoPhillips Occupational and Environmental Health Endowed Scholarship

Two $2,500 scholarships

 The scholarship was established in 2011 by ConocoPhillips. ConocoPhillips' primary goal is to operate a safe and efficient business that protects communities and environments. These scholarships were created to help advance public health education at OU and target students whose career paths align with the company's goal. This endowment is the first corporate-sponsored scholarship in the College. The endowment enhances existing support by ConocoPhillips, including three-month summer internships and participation in programs that provide students access to career opportunities and ways to stay current in the field.

Selection criteria:

  • Full-time, regularly enrolled student in the College of Public Health Department of Occupational and Environmental Health
  • Have satisfactorily completed 9 hours in the College of Public Health
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5
  • Plus consideration may be given to students from an under-represented group

COPH Advisory Board Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2011 by College of Public Health Advisory Board. Following the Scholarship Recognition Luncheon in August 2010, discussion was held at the COPH Advisory Board meeting about the growth of the college's scholarship opportunities, the impact scholarships have on students' lives and career development, and specific actions the Board might take to help further this priority. A suggestion was made that the Board establish a scholarship. Over the course of the next few months, several members offered to give dollar-for-dollar matches, and through the commitment and generosity of the group, $58,507 was initially raised for the endowment. As additional gifts to the Fund increase the principal, the number of annual awards can expand.

  • Enrolled student in the College of Public Health
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5
  • Plus consideration may be given to students with promise and potential for a distinguished career in the field of public health.

 

Roy B Deal, Jr Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2001 to honor Roy B. Deal, Jr., PhD (1919-2012). Dr. Deal earned BA ('47), MA ('48) and PhD ('53), all from the University of Oklahoma. He served as general foreman with Boeing over the "Experimental" shop on the first B-29, followed by a year in the U.S. Navy teaching radar technologies. He was an Assistant Professor, Department of Mathematics, OSU, including a year of study and research at University of Paris (Sorbonne). He was a Professor, Department of Biostatistics & Epidemiology, OUHSC (1967). Dr. Deal traveled the globe, with sabbaticals at Universities of Dublin, Manchester, London, Stockholm, Athens, and Pahlavia (Iran). He retired from OUHSC in 1985 with a distinguished career with awards too numerous to mention.

Selection criteria:

  • Full-time, regularly enrolled Biostatistics student in the College of Public Health Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology
  • Overall GPA of 3.5
  • Has engaged in a variety of extracurricular activities
  • Supplemental financial assistance needed
  • May be awarded to the same individual in two consecutive years

David J Falcone Memorial Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2001 to honor David J. Falcone, PhD (1944-1996). Dr. Falcone earned BA and PhD from Duke University, and MA from Arizona State University. He was regarded nationally and internationally for his expertise in gerontology and long-term care. He was faculty member, Duke University, while serving as Associate Editor, Journal of Health, Policy, Politics & Law. Dr. Falcone was recruited to OU in 1992 as Chair and Professor, Health Administration and Policy, and Associate Director, Oklahoma Center on Aging. He was recognized as a role model who intellectually stimulated and inspired students, earning the OUHSC Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award (1996). He was major participant in RWJ Foundation grants on long-term care, as well as Oklahoma Rural Research and Demonstration Center.

Selection criteria:

  • Full-time, regularly enrolled graduate level student in the College of Public Health MHA program, having completed between 24-30 credit hours in the program
  • Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Potential for distinguished career in the field
  • U.S. citizen
  • Letter of application that includes a statement of career goals

Rosetta Fisher Student Scholarship through the College of Public Health Alumni Association

Two $2,500 scholarships

The scholarship was established in 2005 to honor Rosetta Fisher. Ms. Fisher was an OU employee for 33 years, the last 27 in the College of Public Health. Her first position in COPH was program admissions coordinator, handling recruitment, admissions, enrollment, and graduation. She moved to administrative manager, overseeing Dean's office staff, college budget and first accreditation, ending her tenure as Assistant to the Dean. Ms. Fisher was recognized with Employee of the Month Award, International & African-American Student Association Award, COPH Alumni Association Service Award, and Regents Award for Superior Service. She retired in 2005 and now pursues genealogy and enjoys grandchildren and nieces.

Selection criteria:

  • Must have completed 18 semester hours of their degree program
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5
  • Nominee(s) must show promise in the field of public health, with preference given for work experience in public or community-based health services
  • 1-2 letters of support

James N George Scholarship in Biostatistics and Epidemiology

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2011 to honor James N. George, MD. Dr. George is a George Lynn Cross Professor, Department of Medicine (2005-present). He earned medical Degree from Ohio State University (1962); trained in internal medicine and hematology (1962-1970) at Vanderbilt University, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, and University of Rochester. He was the Chief of OU Hematology-Oncology Section (1990-99) and Director of Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program (1990-2002). Dr. George's current focus include thrombocytopenia, describing the demographics, clinical course, and outcomes of patients with immune thrombocytopenia, drug-induced thrombocytopenia, and thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura. He is active in American Society of Hematology (ASH); served as President (2005); Development Committee (2010-2013).

  • Full-time, regularly enrolled student in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Plus consideration given to students who are pursuing research in hematology or oncology

CMDR Edmund H Gleason Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 1998 to honor CMDR Edmund Gleason (1915-1986). CMDR Gleason received OU?s first public health degree in 1949 through a GI bill: BS Public Health & Sanitation, then in the College of Arts and Sciences. His first job following graduation was city-county sanitarian, Lawton, overseeing implementation of a state-of-the-art sanitary landfill which was subsequently used as a model for others. He participated in The Passage to Freedom (1954), a Naval operation that evacuated over 1 million Vietnamese refugees from Haiphong south to Saigon. Received Vietnamese Presidential Unit Citation and Secretary of Navy Commendation for his efforts. CMDR Gleason had a distinguished military career in the U.S. Navy, with over 30 years of service.

Selection criteria:

  • Full-time, regularly enrolled student in the College of Public Health
  • Overall GPA of 3.0
  • Among the plus factors considered will be membership in an under-represented group such as American Indian, Alaskan Native, African American, etc. 
  • Other plus factors include obstacles the applicant has overcome, socio-economic background, membership among a group with significant health disparities, and unique attributes an applicant may possess.

Hudson Family Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2013 to honor the Hudson Family. It is created to assist students preparing for a community-based health practice. Priority is given to students who purse a degree in the BSE department. Leslie and Clifford Hudson are both graduates of the University of Oklahoma and have a long history of supporting the academic mission of the institution. Dr. Hudson received her Ph.D. in Epidemiology in 1990. In the past, she served as an adjunct faculty member in the BSE Department and currently is a member of the COPH Advisory Board. The Hudsons are involved in a variety of philanthropic activities in the state and nationally. Mr. Hudson is the Chairman, President and CEO of Sonic Corporation. The Hudsons reside in Oklahoma City, and have two sons, Stuart and Bennett.

  • Full-time regularly enrolled student in the College of Public Health
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Priority given to a student pursuing a degree in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology preparing for a community-based public health practice

Brent Hurd Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2008 to honor Brent Hurd (1973-2005). Mr. Hurd earned BA in Economics from University of Rochester. He was a member of Chi Phi Phi fraternity. He hosted a popular campus radio show and was a great DJ with extensive knowledge of music. He married his college sweetheart, Denise Brien, in 1998. Mr. Hurd was a natural athlete who loved to travel and hike. He was working as a research assistant at the Oklahoma State Department of Health and in the final year of earning a master's degree in health administration when his life was cut short.

Selection criteria:

  • Full-time, regularly enrolled graduate level student in the College of Public Health MHA program, having completed no more than 30 credit
  • Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Potential for successful career as a health administrator
  • U.S. citizen
  • Letter of application to includes a statement of career goals

Johnson Family Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2016 by Dr. and Mrs. David L. Johnson and family to provide scholarships to students pursing studies in the area of Occupational and Environmental Health.  Dr. and Mrs. Johnson are both long-time employees of the University with a commitment to helping OU students succeed and meet their professional goals and careers.  Dr. Johnson, Professor and Associate Dean in the College of Public Health has been with the University since 1991 and Mrs. Johnson, Senior Administrative Manager in the College of Allied Health, has been with the University since 1993.

Selection criteria:

  • Full-time, regularly enrolled student in the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health
  • Completed at least 9 hours within the program
  • Minimum GPA of 3.3
  • Demonstrated financial need

Robert W Ketner Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 1999 to honor Robert W. Ketner, PhD (1925-1995). Dr. Ketner earned BA and PhD from OU, and MSW from Colorado. He served as psychiatric social worker in Topeka, faculty member in OU School of Social Work, and later in COPH's Health Promotion Sciences. He was an inspired public health advocate in response to his own life experiences with polio and the stigma that surrounded it. His strongest relationships outside of family were with his students and faculty colleagues. Dr. Ketner was instrumental in keeping the COPH from being closed by the legislature in the early '70s due to severe budgetary crisis. He shared a strong bond with his twin William, his benefactor and lifelong supporter.

Elisa T Lee Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2010 to honor Elisa T. Lee, PhD. Dr. Lee is a George Lynn Cross Research Professor in BSE, and former Dean, COPH (1994-2002). She was the Founder and Director, Center for American Indian Health Research. She devoted to research and training to improve health and reduce health disparities in the American Indian population. Dr. Lee spent over 30 years focusing on research in Native American population, bringing more than $45M in research funds to OU. She has authored over 200 technical papers in a variety of prestigious journals, primarily focused on Indian health, particularly relating to diabetes, cardiovascular disease and eye disease. She is a member of the National Advisory Council for Minority Health and Health Disparities and continues as a valued member of the COPH faculty

Selection criteria:

  • Enrolled student in the Hudson College of Public Health, enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours or more
  • Overall GPA of 3.5
  • Demonstrated potential for success in a public health area

Dan J Macer Scholarship

Two or More $2,500 scholarships (provided for two academic years)

The scholarship was established in 1997 to honor Dan J. Macer (1917-2001). Mr. Macer earned MS in Health Administration from Northwestern University. He retired as Major, U.S. Army (1946) and awarded Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Distinguished Unit Badge for exemplary acts while serving in WWII. He held senior executive positions in Veterans Administration & U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, and VAMC in Oklahoma City. Mr. Macer served as Interim Dean, COPH (1980), President, Dan J. Macer Inc., consultant to health fields, professional associations, health planners, etc. He held leadership roles in various community organizations.

Selection criteria:

  • Full-time, regularly enrolled student  in the College of Public Health
  • Maintain an overall GPA of 3.3 each semester
  • Continuous enrollment (Fall and Spring) semesters throughout both years of award

OU Giving Day Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

This scholarship was established to celebrate the gifts received from the College of Public Health OU Giving Day held on February 28, 2017.  The college participated in a 24-hour campus wide campaign to raise funds directly to support student scholarships.  Our goal was met and the funds are being used to support an MPH Interdisciplinary Public Health student scholarship.

  • enrolled student in the MPH Interdisciplinary Public Health Program
  • Overall GPA of 3.3 or higher

Gary E. Raskob Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2022 to honor Gary E. Raskob, Ph.D., the former Dean of the Hudson College of Public Health (2002 – 2022), and the current Senior Vice President and Provost at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

Selection criteria:

  • Full-time, regularly enrolled student in the Hudson College of Public Health
  • Overall GPA of 3.5
  • Must not be the Donor or an immediate family member of the Donor.

Diane E Riggert Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2016 by Dr. Aaron Boyd and Mrs. Tanja Krous Boyd to honor Tanja's mother, Diane E. Riggert, RN, BSN, MPH. Diane taught pediatric nursing, and upon completion of her MPH from OU, worked at the Seattle Children's Hospital, where she was the Manager of Occupational Health Services.   The scholarship was established to support a Registered Nurse pursuing a Master of Public Health degree.

  • enrolled student in the College of Public Health pursuing an MPH degree
  • Registered Nurse
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Priority consideration will be given to a single parent

J C Watts Family Health and Wellness Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

This scholarship was established in 2000 in memory of J.C. Watts, Sr.  In 2015 the family directed the funds be used to recruit and support students who study the health and wellness of diverse populations. 

Selection criteria:

  • enrolled student in the College of Public Health pursuing a master?s degree
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Priority consideration given to minority students or those student willing to focus on urban populations

Kathleen A. Shaver Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2020 by 1994 OEH alumna, Kathleen Shaver to support students pursuing a degree in the field of occupational health, environmental health or industrial hygiene. After graduating from OU, she held various teaching posts and environmental health jobs all over the United States driving responsible supply chain manufacturing practices for automotive, chemicals, toys and now electronics manufacturing. Kathleen has led several global initiatives dedicated to advancing voluntary codes of conduct and promoting ethical sourcing practices. Presently, Kathleen is the Director of Supplier Responsibility for Apple where she leads the firm’s initiatives to ensure the safe launch of new manufacturing and green initiatives to conserve natural resources in its supply chain.

Selection criteria:

  • Full-time, regularly enrolled student in the Hudson College of Public Health Department of Occupational and Environmental Health.
  • Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • Must have a demonstrated socioeconomic disadvantage.
  •  Must not be the Donor or an immediate family member of the Donor.

Julie A. Stoner Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2020 to honor the memory of Dr. Julie Stoner, Ph.D. Dr. Stoner served as Professor of Biostatistics, Associate Dean for Research and Chair of the Biostatistics and Epidemiology Department. She held the Edward E. and Helen T. Bartlett Chair in Public Health, and was recognized for her academic excellence as both a Presidential Professor and a David Ross Boyd Professor. Dr. Stoner made outstanding contributions to each of the College’s missions of teaching, research and public health service. She greatly strengthened our partnerships with the other Colleges, the Stephenson Cancer Center, and the Harold Hamm Diabetes Center. She was a key contributor and core leader within the Clinical Translational Sciences initiative, and she led the impressive growth of research efforts within the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology. Dr. Stoner was a very impactful, beloved member of our faculty and a great colleague during her esteemed academic career. Sadly, Dr. Stoner passed away on June 18, 2020 after a 15-month long battle with cancer.

  • Full-time, regularly enrolled student in the Hudson College of Public Health Department of Biostatistics ad Epidemiology.
  • Overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Must not be a contributor to the Fund or an immediate family member of a contributor. 

Claudia Griffith Memorial Scholarship

One $2,500 scholarship

The scholarship was established in 2018 by the friends, family and colleagues of the Honorable Claudia Griffith. State Representative for House District 45 and 1994 MPH alumna of the College of Public Health. Representative Griffith served the people of Oklahoma as a State Representative for House District 45 in 2014 and was then reelected in 2016. She had a passion for improving our healthcare system and ensuring that more Oklahomans have access to quality medical care. Griffith passed away suddenly in July 2018.
