MPH Program Competencies

Master of Public Health (MPH) Degree

The MPH degree in Environmental/Occupational Health and the College of Public Health are accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). After completing the MPH degree, the graduate will have acquired the following competencies:

  • Explain genetic, physiologic, and psychosocial factors that affect susceptibility to adverse health outcomes following exposure to environmental hazards
  • Interprets federal and state regulatory programs, guidelines, and authorities that control environmental health issues
  • Utilizes and applies methods and tools for assessing environmental risks
  • Applies methods for assessing, preventing and controlling environmental hazards that pose risks to human health and safety
  • Explains the general mechanisms of toxicology in eliciting a toxic response to various environmental exposures
  • Designs risk management and risk communication approaches in relation to issues of environmental justice and equality
  • Applies theory and strategy-based communication principles across different settings and audiences
  • Evaluates how biological, chemical and physical agents might affect human health
  • Applies biological principles to development and implementation of disease prevention, control, or management programs
