Biography

Dr. Massey’s research explores how communication science can improve public health. This research focuses on three areas: 1) Developing and testing warning messages to promote health behaviors; 2) researching social influences to understand how social context impacts individual behavior; and 3) conducting media intervention research designed to improve decision-making. The long-term goal of this program is to develop population-level interventions to prevent chronic disease and promote public health and wellness.

Dr. Massey is a team scientist who seeks to bi-directionally translate research findings between population and mechanistic levels. He uses quantitative and qualitative methods, and his program provides a collaborative environment for students to learn about public health communication, regulatory science, and addiction science across domains and methods. He directs the Science Communication and Health Lab at the University of Oklahoma and is the principal investigator on a K01 award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
