Shaping Healthier Communities: PhD Student Dorsa Hosseininasab Receives OPHA Exceptional Merit Award

Published: Monday, April 21, 2025

For Dorsa Hosseininasab, public health is more than a career path—it’s a calling.

A PhD student in the Department of Health Promotion Science at the OU Hudson College of Public Health, Dorsa is on a mission to tackle some of the most pressing health issues facing communities today. Her dedication, innovation, and impact were recently recognized at the state level when she was awarded the Exceptional Merit Award by the Oklahoma Public Health Association (OPHA). This prestigious honor celebrates individuals who demonstrate an exceptional understanding of community health, contribute to meaningful public health outcomes, and serve as a credit to the profession.

Dorsa’s research focuses on obesity and its related chronic conditions—such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes—exploring how factors like food environments, contextual triggers, and dietary habits shape health outcomes. Her work stands out not only for its scientific rigor but for its real-world relevance.

“I care deeply about connecting science to everyday life,” Dorsa shares. “Whether it’s through studying diet quality, food systems, or behavioral factors, my goal is always to make public health research accessible, applicable, and impactful.”

One area where she’s making a significant impact is in understanding the role of ultra-processed foods and the potential of plant-based diets in preventing and managing obesity. Her findings offer practical guidance for both individuals and policymakers looking to reduce the burden of chronic disease through improved nutrition.

But Dorsa’s contributions don’t stop at the lab or in published journals. She’s also a mentor—supporting students and colleagues as they pursue their own work in public health. By fostering collaboration and curiosity, she’s helping to build a stronger, more connected public health community.

Her academic track record speaks volumes. Dorsa has authored 22 publications, published two books, and presented her work at national conferences, including the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) Conference in Chicago (June 2024) and Obesity Week in San Antonio (November 2024). Her presence at these prestigious events underscores the national relevance of her work and the growing recognition she’s receiving in the field.

Dorsa remains deeply engaged with the public health community in Oklahoma, contributing her time and expertise to initiatives that promote equity, evidence-based practice, and better health outcomes for all.

“Receiving this award is a huge honor,” she says. “But more importantly, it motivates me to keep going—to keep asking questions, supporting others, and working toward lasting change in public health.”

At the Hudson College of Public Health, we are proud to celebrate Dorsa’s achievements and to support her continued journey as a leader, scholar, and advocate for healthier communities.
