In the past year, BSESA has reached new heights during the pandemic. Some of our highlights include:

-A student panel discussing advice regarding thesis/practicum/dissertations

-A presentation on In Pursuit on Optimal Performance by Student Counselling Services

-A presentation on Using Smartphones to Identify and Intervene upon Mechanisms of Behavior Change by Dr. Michael Businelle from Health Promotion Research Center (HPRC)

-A presentation on Survey Development and Sampling by Dr. Sixia Chen and Ashley White from Department of BSE

-A presentation on Introduction to Qualitative and Mixed-Methods Research by Dr. Marshall Cheney from University of Oklahoma and Dr. Sydney Martinez from Department of BSE

-An introduction of BSE Student Lounge (CHB 394)

-An H-COPH mask fundraiser

-An informal introduction of BSE Student Buddy System

BSESA is a student organization geared toward providing activities and events for students in the OUHSC College of Public Health’s Department for Biostatistics and Epidemiology (BSE). BSESA meetings cover topics ranging from leadership development, to professional development, to volunteer opportunities – all pertaining to the fields of biostatistics and epidemiology. While BSE is the focus of our organization, any interested student and/or faculty member is welcome to take part in BSESA.

Introduction to Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research

Guest speakers: 

Marshall Cheney, Ph.D.

Sydney Martinez, Ph.D.

Qualitative and mixed methodologies can be used to address research questions complementary to those addressed with quantitative methods.

Dr. Cheney will also share ways that qualitative and quantitative researchers can work together to create rigorous research studies.

Dr. Sydney Martinez will also share her experiences as an epidemiologist conducting a qualitative research study.
