Biostatistics Professor's Short Course Selected for 2023 American Association for Public Opinion Research

Dr. Sixia Chen’s proposed short course “Introduction to data integration for combining probability and non-probability samples” has been peer reviewed and selected for the 2023 AAPOR (American Association for Public Opinion Research) and will be taught in the first week of May 2023.

 

The American Association for Public Opinion Research has a long (founded 1947) and rich history. It is one of the top research associations for public opinion research including survey research and methods in the world. AAPOR short course proposal is highly competitive and only limited short courses will be selected each year. The American Association for Public Opinion Research (AAPOR) is a professional organization of more than 2,000 public opinion and survey research professionals in the United States and from around the world, with members from academia, media, government, the non-profit sector and private industry. AAPOR publishes three academic journals: Public Opinion Quarterly, Survey Practice and the Journal for Survey Statistics and Methodology. The association's founders include pioneering pollsters Archibald Crossley, George Gallup, and Elmo Roper.

 

The description of Dr. Chen’s short course is as following:

 

Nonprobability samples have been used frequently in practice including education, medical study, and public opinion research. Due to selection bias, naïve estimates without adjustments by using nonprobability samples may lead to misleading results. In this course, we will include the following topics: 1. Introduction to probability samples, nonprobability samples, and their applications in practice; 2. Calibration weighting approach; 3. Propensity score weighting approaches; 4. Mass imputation approaches; 5. Hybrid approaches by combining both propensity score weighting and mass imputation approaches. For each of the previous topics, we will provide hands on exercises by using some real data applications including National Health Nutrition and Examination Survey, the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, and National Health Interview Survey by using SAS/R computational codes. Computational codes will be made publicly available for audience to use.
