Slate Boyer, MPH and Joshua Moore, MPH, both Epidemiology graduates from May 2021, recently received appointments to the Council for State and Territorial Epidemiologist’s Applied Epidemiology (CSTE) Fellowship. CSTE works to advance public health policy and epidemiologic capacity. They provide information, education, and developmental support of practicing epidemiologists in a wide range of areas as well as expertise for program and surveillance efforts.

CSTE works to establish more effective relationships among state and other health agencies. It also provides technical advice and assistance to partner organizations and to federal public health agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). CSTE members have surveillance and epidemiology expertise in a broad range of areas including occupational health, infectious diseases, environmental health, chronic diseases, injury, maternal and child health, and more. CSTE supports effective public health surveillance and sound epidemiologic practice through training, capacity development, and peer consultation. The CSTE fellowships are supported by the CSTE Foundation to support the CSTE mission: to develop, expand, and diversify the epidemiology workforce.

I was matched with the Office of the Epidemiologist at the North Dakota Department of Health through the Council for State and Territorial Epidemiologist’s Applied Epidemiology Fellowship. I will be involved in several projects in the areas ranging from infectious disease (including COVID) to substance abuse to chronic illnesses. These projects will involve analysis of surveillance system’s data to determine pregnancy rate among women with Chlamydia and/or Gonorrhea, evaluation of data quality of surveillance systems for non-reportable conditions, development of a surveillance system for substance abuse, and opportunities to be involved in outbreak investigations. These are just some of the potential projects that I will be involved in.” – Slate Boyer

“For my CSTE Fellowship, I was matched with the Bureau of Epidemiology at the Florida Department of Health. My position is stationed within the acute disease investigation and zoonotic/vector-borne disease units. I will be involved in a wide range of different infectious disease projects from HIV to COVID to Zika. Some of the projects I am currently working on include: evaluating the surveillance of school related COVID infections in Florida, evaluating the geographic/demographic distribution of genotype ordering among newly diagnosed HIV patients in Florida, Evaluating the effect of zika infection during pregnancy on the risk of congenital abnormalities, and developing guidance for the investigation and surveillance of Human Monkeypox Infections in Florida.” - Josh Moore
