Two New Hudson Fellows in Public Health Named

The Hudson Fellows in Public Health Program was established in 2015 to support outstanding students in full time doctoral study and research at the Hudson College of Public Health, through the generosity of Dr. Leslie and Cliff Hudson. 

Please join us in congratulating our newest Hudson Fellows, Afsheen Hasan and Pawan Acharya.

Afsheen Hasan received her MD degree from Ibrahim Medical College, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2008.  She received her MPH in Epidemiology from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, Little Rock, AR in 2016.

Afsheen works as a Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology (BSE).  She currently serves as the research coordinator on two studies, a Stephenson Cancer Center (SCC)-funded pilot project to evaluate the implementation of smoking cessation within primary care for patients with type 2 diabetes and a National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities funded study that observes optimizing smoking cessation within Diabetes care at the Cherokee Nation. She has co-authored published protocol paper and two manuscripts submitted for publication. Her research interests focus on tobacco-related health disparities among populations with low socioeconomic status, different racial groups, and sexual and gender minorities (SGM). She use Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) data to explore tobacco use patterns in different population groups.

Pawan Acharya received his MS in Public Health at the University of Southern Denmark in 2015.  He also spent more than 5 years working on public health projects in Nepal including developing and implementing the first-ever community based mobile health (mHealth) intervention in Nepal. The program is being adopted by the government and scaled in multiple districts of Nepal.

Since joining the Ph.D. in Epidemiology program in fall 2019, he has working as a graduate research assistant for the Strong Heart Study(SHS) as well as several other cancer research projects within the BSE Department. Pawan has served as secretary for the Epidemiologic Research Student Association (ERSA)-2020-2021 and social chair and secretary for the Biostatistics and Epidemiology Student Association (BSESA) for 2020-2021. Additionally he will be serving as the President of BSESA for 2021-2022. Additionally, he volunteers as a Student Teaching Assistant in Intermediate Epidemiologic Methods. Besides on-campus activities, Pawan volunteers as an Associate Editor of BMC Public Health Journal since 2020 and an ad-hoc peer reviewer for reputed journals in public health such as BMJ Open, Plos One, Journal of Epidemiology and Global Health.
