Dr. Dee Terrell, associate professor of epidemiology and sovereignty, equity, diversity and inclusion faculty liaison, was invited to be a speaker on the topic of diversity at the Brazilian Congress of Hematology Hemotherapy and Cell Therapy conference in Sau Paulo, Brazil. Terrell gave two presentations at the conference: “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: Clinical Trials” and “What is Race- a Genetic, Biological, or Social Construct?”

Dr. Terrell discussed how we often treat race as a genetic concept when actually it is a social construct that was created. She also discussed how systemic racism and racial health disparities are real and advises all researchers to think about why and how they are collecting race as a variable. She warns researchers to be careful in how they interpret the results so as not to “blame” the minority for observed disparity.
